Pres. Obama Just Used His Presidential Power to Do One Last Thing. It’s Life Changing.

President Obama gave many individuals Christmas gifts through pardons. On Monday, he granted 78 pardons and 158 commutations, the most in one single day in history.

The majority of the pardons and commutations were for insane drug sentences. Obama’s pardons and commutations should include a blanket pardon for minor drug offenses and immigrants called Dreamers.

According to Obama, there are more pardons to come. This should have happened years ago, especially for the minor drug offenses.

All over America, people are sitting in prison for minor drug offenses. These offenses include possession of small quantities of marijuana, and a blanket pardon should be given to these offenders.

A blanket pardon would be constitutional. The president is given the “Power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment” (Article 2, Section 2 of the Constitution).

There is no mention of pardons being for one individual only. A blanket pardon for Dreamers would also be beneficial for the country.

While Obama has pardoned fewer prisoners than any president in modern history, he has granted 1,176 sentence commutations, which included 395 life sentences.

Obama stated that his number of pardons would comparable to other presidents.  He is roughly 40 pardons short of being in line with them, and he has 31 days left in his term to “catch up.”

Before leaving office, Obama should grant blanket pardons to Dreamers and either pardon or commute the sentences of those with minor drug convictions. It you believe that this is the right thing to do, please contact the White House at 202-456-1414 and express your opinion.
