In a GREAT development for the Resistance, news has just emerged that former President Barack Obama will be re-entering the national fray to help Democrats beat Team Trump and their congressional lackeys once and for all. With the 2018 midterm elections on the horizon, Obama’s help seriously couldn’t come at a better time.
Republicans honestly can’t stand Obama, and Trump was literally elected president just because he promised to do the opposite of everything Obama did in the White House. Trump has stayed true to his word in that regard, but it’s been godawful for our nation.
So Obama’s now saying enough is enough, and he’s ready to get back into the political fight, though in a calculated and paced manner. Per The Hill:
“Aides will huddle with Obama in the coming weeks to plot out what shape the former president’s fall schedule will take. Advisers close to him say that while he will play an active role in helping his party rebuild, much of his work will be behind the scenes. He is likely to take on fundraising, for example, something he has done for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the National Democratic Redistricting Committee since leaving office.”
Nobody’s better at fundraising than Obama, and nobody understands re-districting better than him, so his alleged newfound roles in the Democratic Party will be well-placed. Though he’ll have to maintain a difficult balance of doing his job and keeping a low-profile, lest Obama energizes Trump’s base anew.
That’s what Cal Jillson, a professor of political science at Southern Methodist University, is now warning. According to Jillson, Obama needs to walk a fine line, or his whole re-entrance could backfire politically.
“He would be the target against which Trump would direct his fury,” Jillson said. “From Trump’s perspective, nothing better could happen.”
“[Obama]’ll tread lightly because he is not going to be the face of the party when it actually counts in 2020 and 2024,” Jillson continued. “So the extent to which he would emerge and speak to a wide range of issues would preclude the emergence of someone else. They must find a standard-bearer for future elections, and I think [Obama] can at least in the short term suck up all the available oxygen.”
But if there’s anyone who can find the appropriate balance between helping and standing back, it’s Obama. We in the Resistance certainly trust his judgment.
It’s a real shame Obama can’t run for a third term. It’d just be perfect to see him best Trump in the 2020 election.
